Chelsea hatch £25m Hazard bid but face fierce competition from Euro rivals

Chelsea are preparing a £25million bid for Lille midfielder Eden Hazard - but the French club are likely to hold out for an offer matching his €40m (£33m) release clause.

Even if they do attempt to prise the highly-rated 21-yearr-old from France with a larger offer, they face stiff competition with Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and both Inter and AC Milan also in the hunt.

The Blues are one of two clubs ready to approach Lille but the French champions would not be open to a deal which sees the Belgian move in January.

'Yes, we have received a lot of very interesting proposals,' Lille official Jean-Michel Vandamme told L'Equipe.

'But the clubs want the player immediately and on this we have a very clear idea: Hazard will remain at least until the end of the season. He will not go.'

He explained that Lille would agree to a sale in January if the buyers loaned the player back until the end of the season, but neither Hazard nor Chelsea would favour this option.

Manchester City and Arsenal have previously been strongly linked to the playmaker, whose representative Marc Formeaux said: 'The player himself has declared that he wants to play for Madrid.'

There has been no bid from Chelsea for Lille's Eden Hazard and [apart from Cahill] Villas-Boas doesn't anticipate further new signings.

That's what AVB is saying today. However, only a couple of days or so ago he said we might well be in the market for a second signing. Best to keep an open mind, methinks.

So much for any hope* of Chelsea getting Eden Hazard to reinforce the team this window. The Belgian 21-year-old has described a move away from Lille before Tuesday's deadline as 'impossible', which sounds fairly definitive - he's not going anywhere until summer. What is good news is that Hazard has told French TV station Canal+ that his next destination will be England.

*However small it was.

Hazard has claimed that Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are on his radar for the summer, and that he wants to play for a top team without fear of only being a reserve player. What does this mean for the Blues' chances of landing him? I'd have to say that they're pretty high. Let's look at the competition and see how things stand with them.

Highly-rated Lille winger Eden Hazard has revealed he wants to move to England this summer after denying reports of a possible transfer to Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

Hazard, 21, has been linked to some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea and, though PSG have targeted him following their inability to sign either Carlos Tevez or Alexandre Pato, said he will stay with Lille until the summer when he hopes to join a Premier League side.

However, the player would not reveal his preferred destination.

"I have [played in] over 100 Ligue 1 matches, I'm young but I want to know anything else," he told Canal+. "Paris is tempting with the players there now but I prefer to go abroad.

"I think I'm heading to England, the style of play suits me there and I think it's in this league that I can learn as much," said the Belgium international, who was voted Ligue 1's best player last season. "We know the great English clubs. It will be a club where I'm sure to play with a play style that suits me."

Should any move to the Premier League become permanent, Hazard will join young compatriots Romelu Lukaku and Thibault Courtois, who joined Chelsea last summer, in doing so, though Courtois has spent the season on loan at Atletico Madrid.
